Portugal Mobile Networks & Coverage Guide

Portuguese mobile networks: the honest version

Portugal has three major networks and one newer entrant. All three majors are solid. Coverage is generally excellent, especially compared to some other European countries. You won’t have problems in cities or tourist areas on any network.

MEO (Altice), the largest network

MEO has the widest coverage footprint in Portugal. Best in rural areas, on highways, and on the islands (Madeira and Azores). If you’re going anywhere off the beaten path, MEO is the safest bet.

They’re also the only major carrier with a tourist-friendly eSIM product (the eSIM Enjoy) at local pricing.

Vodafone PT, premium with the best speeds

Vodafone is the premium network. Excellent speeds in urban areas, strong 5G rollout, and the network most commonly used by international eSIM providers (Airalo, Holafly, and others connect through Vodafone PT).

Coverage is slightly behind MEO in the most rural parts of Portugal and on the islands, but the difference is small and irrelevant if you’re sticking to the standard tourist route.

NOS, solid third option

NOS is the third major operator. Good coverage across the mainland, less commonly used by travel eSIM providers. Their own prepaid eSIM (with unlimited data and 5G) is available but the website is primarily in Portuguese.

Fine network, but there’s no strong reason to pick NOS over MEO or Vodafone for a tourist trip.

DIGI Portugal, skip it

DIGI is a newer, budget carrier in Portugal. They do support eSIM, but the activation flow requires a Portuguese account, ID verification, and multiple steps through their “My DIGI” portal. Not tourist-friendly at all. Unless you’re a Portugal resident, don’t bother.

Tip

For most trips (Lisbon, Porto, Algarve), the network doesn't matter much. All three are excellent in tourist areas. The network choice only matters if you're road-tripping through rural Alentejo or visiting the Azores.

The pattern: in cities and along the coast, they’re all great. Inland and on the islands, MEO has the edge.

5G in Portugal

Portugal had about 15,500 installed 5G stations as of March 2026, covering all municipalities and 76% of parishes. In practice, you’ll get 5G in Lisbon and Porto on all three networks. Outside major cities, 4G is what you’ll use, and it’s plenty fast.

What speeds to expect

Info

Portugal's mobile speeds are solid mid-range for Europe. Comparable to Spain and noticeably better than Italy in rural areas. You won't have speed problems for any normal tourist use.
